I updated the site software today, including the primary software and a bunch of plugins. So far everything seems to be working great but it’s very possible that something has gone awry somewhere.

The good news is that we’re back up (obviously), and things should stay that way now that they’re resolved.

For those of you who are curious as to what happened, the forums have been under attack by bots for a while now. Those bots, which previously relegated themselves to posting spam and other garbage, recently started posting content that is illegal in the country hosting this site (I’ll leave it to your imagination as to what that might be). That content got flagged by automated search agents that monitor the internet for the proliferation of such content, and our web host suspended the account.

Now that we’ve got things all cleaned up, we’re up and running again, minus the forums. Those will not be coming back. I don’t anticipate any further interruptions in service, although anything is possible.

I’ve just upgraded the web site to wordpress 2.7. If you’ve noticed that anything has broken, please report it here.

In any case, I’ve implemented a . . . → Read More: PRE tags in comments finally fixed, I think]]> I think I finally figured out why the PRE tags weren’t rendering in comments — WordPress was stripping them out because they weren’t in the allowed tags list. The reason this was hard to track down is because apparently that list doesn’t apply to me (as an admin).

In any case, I’ve implemented a fix to what I’m pretty sure the issue was, so you should be able to put any code you add to the comments inside PRE tags now like the highlighted instructions say and it should actually work.

The server configuration has been largely completed and the problem that was causing the site to crash every few hours has been found and remedied. The forums are now online again — so we should be up and running now faster than ever.
